Gordon Parks Editorial Spreads
“Beyond the Frame.” Gordon Parks, a self-taught artist, became the first African-American photographer for Life and Vogue magazines. His photojournalism documents the issues surrounding civil rights and poverty. Gordon’s photography uniquely captures the human experience and plight “beyond the frame” of the camera lens. These editorial spreads are inspired by the unique compositions and stark contrasts of Gordon’s photography. The design replicates his style into the editorial layouts through a black and white color scheme and an untraditional, uncomfortable composition. In the layout design, the words and photographs bleed off the page. The bleed better enhances and illustrates the theme of “Beyond the Frame.”
